What is the NAITS?

The National Animal Identification and Traceability System (NAITS) is a comprehensive animal information management system that utilises forgery-proof ear tags, cattle passports combined with digital technology for identifying and tracing livestock across Nigeria. This is carried out in accordance with the global standards stipulated by the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR).

NAITS resolves the social, economic, and security problems Nigerian livestock sector to boost the industry's overall productivity. Driven by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) through the Department of Animal Husbandry Services and the Department of Animal Health, this solution would manage the numerous social, economic, and security issues arising from the absence of quality animal information.

Why the NAITS?

The Nigerian livestock industry is a vital sector of the country's economy, contributing significantly to its food security and economic viability. Properly harnessing this sector can generate significant foreign exchange earnings for the country. Presently, it is dominated by smallholder pastoral producers with a few commercial production systems in operation. Nigeria's livestock sector contends with several challenges, including inadequate security at pastoralist and herder levels, insufficient animal data, outdated animal breeding practices, and preventable disease outbreaks. These challenges inhibit the industry's growth and development, particularly in terms of productivity and competitiveness.

The National Animal Identification and Traceability System, or "NAITS", was developed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, significant stakeholders, and cattle
breeders associations to address these issues and strengthen the livestock sector. Through the collection of data and the effective tracing and identification of livestock across the nation, the NAITS seeks to provide judicious livestock planning and management. As part of this innovation, Ranch.ID, the NAITS Technology Tool, will help to create a sustainable environment for the development and growth of the Nigerian livestock industry.

-The NAITS is in line with NATIP, a policy that was developed to make Nigeria's food and nutrition secure through the extensive adoption of 21st-century knowledge, technology, and innovation in the agricultural sector.

What does the Ranch. ID tool do?

It is an effective electronic tool for tracking and identifying livestock and uses 2-dimensional data
matrix barcodes on ear tags in addition to scalable features like biometric identification
technologies like facial recognition.
